Using Tags
Tags are a simple way to flag and organize important conversations with your coparent or journal entries you keep. Whether you’re tracking school topics, finances, or schedule changes, tags help you stay organized and make it easy to find things later.
If you have a subscription, one or several tags may have been added for you automatically by our helpful AI.
How to Use Tags
- Add a tag: Tap the ➕ icon next to any message or journal entry.
- Remove a tag: Tap and hold a tag to delete it.
- Search by tag: Tap 🔍 to find messages or entries with a specific tag (requires a subscription). More about search
Are Tags Private?
Yes. Tags are completely private to you. They’re never shared with your coparent (even on shared messages) and they don’t appear on printed or exported reports. Think of tags as your personal way to organize and make sense of communication.
What Tags Should I Use?
You can create any tags you like — for example:
Topics: School, Finances, Court, Handoffs
Tone: Aggressive, Lying, Neutral, Positive
Using consistent tags makes it easy to revisit patterns or locate information later. You can separate multiple word concepts with dashes.
What About Special Tags?
Some tags are added automatically by BestInterest’s AI-powered Message Shield®, to help you focus on what really matters. These special tags can’t be added or removed manually. Here’s what they mean:
CONCERNING
Appears when a message needed filtering to become more peaceful, collaborative, or child-focused, or when it contained no collaborative content. This can include hostility, baiting, personal attacks, coercive pressure, threats, or other content that may warrant documentation or review by a professional.
Tip: Pause before responding and keep communication factual and calm.
THREAT
Marks a message that includes a direct or implied threat of violence, physical harm, or physical confrontation. Threat messages are styled distinctly in the message list so they are easy to notice.
LEGAL-THREAT
Marks threats involving court, lawyers, police, documentation, custody action, or third-party enforcement. These are tracked separately from physical threats.
EMOTIONAL
Marks emotional content that Message Shield softened, stripped, or depersonalized to make the message more collaborative. This tag helps with records and searching, but it is not shown as a message-list icon.
INFLAMMATORY
Marks content that appears designed to provoke, shame, bait, or escalate conflict.
COERCIVE-CONTROL
Marks pressure, intimidation, surveillance, isolation, leverage, or attempts to control access, time, or information.
URGENT
Flags messages that require immediate attention, such as emergencies, last-minute schedule changes, or safety concerns.
Urgent messages bypass delayed notifications so you’re alerted right away.
You can also choose to only receive notifications for urgent or emergency messages in your settings.
SYSTEM
Marks automated system-generated notifications, such as missed calls or app updates.
System tags are informational only and don’t require a response.
