Settings: Solo Mode Calling

BestInterest’s calling feature is designed to give you another safe and simple way to stay connected with your coparent while using Solo Mode. While we feel that coparenting communication is best in written form, we understand that sometimes a phone call is necessary—especially in emergencies.

How Calling Works

When Your Coparent Calls You

  • If your coparent dials your assigned BestInterest number, you will get a call on your phone from that same assigned number.
  • When you answer, you will be asked to confirm you’d like to accept the call, and then you will be directly connected to your coparent.
  • Don’t worry, your coparent simply hears ringing on the other end, so they will not know if you reject the call.
  • This ensures your BestInterest number works like a real phone number while still protecting your personal phone number.

Calling Your Coparent

  • To call your coparent, simply dial your BestInterest number from your phone as a normal phone call.
  • The call will automatically route to your coparent and they will see a call coming from your BestInterest number.
  • Tip: Save your assigned BestInterest number to your contacts with your coparent’s name. That way, their name will appear when they call you. And if you need to reach them, you can just tap their name.

Call Settings

You are always in control of how calls work for you. If you don’t want your coparent to reach you by phone at all, you can Disable Incoming Calls in Settings > Calling Features.

Protect Plus subscribers can choose to automatically record Solo Mode voice calls. Before enabling recording, BestInterest asks you to acknowledge that call recording laws vary by location and that you are responsible for getting any legally required consent from everyone on the call.

Solo Mode voice calls are not transcribed automatically at this time. If you need a written record of important communication, we still recommend following up in writing with a BestInterest message.

Call Limits

The BestInterest calling feature is intended for emergency calling only and is included for free in your subscription. To keep the focus on structured communication, it is limited to:

  • 3 completed calls per month
  • Up to 10 minutes per call

When your coparent calls beyond this limit, the system will simply state that the person they are calling is not available.

Voice Calling vs. Video Calling

Voice calling through an assigned BestInterest number is only available to parents using Solo Mode. This allows you to use your BestInterest number like a real number without needing your coparent’s participation in the app.

For users in Collaborative Mode (both parents using the app), BestInterest offers secure Video Calling. This feature includes options for call recording, automated AI transcription, and customizable time boundaries. Solo Mode calling and Collaborative Mode video calling are separate options; your account uses the calling feature for your current mode. To learn more, read our guide on Video Calling Options.

Calling Features FAQ

Can I make or receive calls in BestInterest?

Yes. In Solo Mode, you can make and receive phone calls with your coparent using your BestInterest number. This keeps your real number private while still acting like a real phone line.

What happens when my coparent calls me?

When your coparent dials your BestInterest number, the call will show as coming from your BestInterest phone number on your phone. If you answer, and you confirm you would like to accept the call, you’ll be directly connected to your coparent.

Will my coparent know I am using BestInterest?

No. It will appear as if your number is a typical cell phone number that can receive calls and messages. There is no voice mail service attached to your number. They will receive a message stating that the caller is not available.

How do I call my coparent?

Just dial your assigned BestInterest number from your phone. The call will automatically route to your coparent and they will see a call coming from your assigned number. When you call your coparent, they are not asked to confirm receipt of your call.

Does this mean I can block my coparent on my phone?

Yes! If you block your coparent on your phone, you will still be able to get calls and messages from them using your BestInterest number.

Can I prevent calls from my coparent in BestInterest?

Yes. In Calling Settings, you can choose to Disable Inbound Calls if you don’t want to be reachable by phone. You can turn this back on anytime.

Are calls recorded or transcribed?

Solo Mode calls are recorded only if you are on Protect Plus and you turn on automatic call recording in Calling Settings. Recording laws vary by state and country, so you are responsible for checking local laws and getting any required consent before recording. Solo Mode calls are not automatically transcribed at this time. For important logistics or court documentation, always follow up with a written message in BestInterest.

Are there limits on calling?

Yes. Calling is included in your subscription, but limited to 3 completed calls per month, up to 10 minutes per call. Once this limit is reached, if your coparent tries calling you, they will be told that the subscriber is not available.

Can I call my BestInterest number to contact emergency services?

No. In a true emergency, please dial 911 or your local emergency number. The BestInterest number can be used to call your coparent (or vice versa) in an emergency.

Why is Voice Calling only in Solo Mode?

Right now, voice calling through an assigned phone number is available only for Solo Mode users. If both parents are on BestInterest (Collaborative Mode), we offer secure, recorded Video Calling as an alternative.
